Braiding
Merging multiple strands of yarn by braiding them together can create a strong and very useful length of braid that can have many uses.
Disc braiding and Lucet braiding are two techniques that I often teach to children and adults. Lucet braids are made using a 2 pronged tool and a continuous length of yarn; they are often associated with the Viking Era. Disc braiding, however, has a rather debated origin. Some people say it originated in the Viking Era but the archaeological evidence is sadly missing. It's more likely to be a more modern interpretation of Kumihimo braiding, which dates back over a thousand years and began in Japan. Despite it's rather uncertain origins, disc braiding is often a favourite and I make kits for children to try it out and make their own beautiful bracelets.
