Nalbinding

Not crochet, not knitting - Nalbinding (also called needle binding) is much older and is more similar to netting than to either of it's modern lookalikes. Nalbinding is on the endangered crafts list and is a rather niche but fascinating craft that I've begun to play with in the last couple of years.
This craft uses a length of yarn and a single needle to create lines of loops more like sewing in knots than knitting, which means it doesn't unravel. This makes it perfect for making items that need to be fairly dense and hardwearing, like socks and mittens. The only historical example to be found in Britain is the York Sock, which dates back to the Viking era and is on display in the Jorvik Museum in York.
